Quit Smoking Tips #1
8 01 2009A quick tip that I would like to throw out there if you are trying to quit smoking….its about Alcohol.
If you are someone who has to smoke when they drink - then I guess you will be giving both up….I know how hard that can be. But if you are someone who can get away with a drink and not have to smoke, use it to your advantage.
The first day without a smoke, around 9pm, I felt like I was gonna die! Quite near the most intense craving for nicotine that I have ever had. I felt like my heart was gonna claw its way through my chest, I wanted to help it too! I was hungry but couldn’t eat enough, I was thirsty but it didn’t help me…..it was horrible. So I did what any full blooded American would do - head out to the liquor store. I ended up drinking 2 bottles of wine. The first was a light $3bottle of Arbor Mist, I poured 4 cups worth and drank them down quick - the whole bottle last about 1 minute 30 seconds….not good for me, I know, but I didn’t know what to do.
I started sipping on the next bottle and ended up shit faced, so on and so forth. But what I learned was that drinking helped me not to focus on the feeling of wanting to rip my chest open. I started looking at the computer and all that it can offer and before I knew it I was feeling better and the “pain” of quitting was not as bad anymore.
Something very important to state is that I am a responsible drunk - I do not ever loose control. I don’t drink so much that I can’t walk, or that I wont remember the next day, or anything like that. I only drink to reduce my cravings, but in all my drunkenness I didn’t forget, even for 1 second, that I was quitting. I never let myself be tempted…..as my roommate smokes still.
I don’t know if I am just so motivated to stop smoking that my room mates smoke habits don’t bother me as much as they would otherwise, or what, but it is not tempting for me to go get a smoke from him. Writing about smoking now makes me want it very bad, but it is something I can handle.
I suggest that you take at least the first 3 or 4 days off of work. While trying to quit if you go to work you run the risks of:
- Smoking with all the smokers at work.
- Yelling at your boss for being a douche
- Loosing your job.
- Boredom is the #1 cause of wanting to go have a smoke
Maye you can’t afford it, or it would be hard to work out….I know. But it is the best way to do it…..besides think of all the money you are going to save when you quit. Think about all the mornings you wake up and can’t breathe, AND you will get sick only half the time now!! It is worth it, discover why it is worth it to you. Maybe you try to quit, go awhile, and mess up. It is OK. Do it again in a few months if you have to, just be prepared to do it and know what to expect. It is a long hard task, I know. But put it this way: You quit and the next day some one waves a smoke in front of you and you falter. It has only been a single day, that is hardly anytime in the real world anyways. Start quitting again, do it again. Don’t give up. Don’t think that because you mess up after a day or two that it is all over because It is not.
It is important when quitting, if not before hand then as soon as possible, to discover what things make you want to smoke. If getting in the car makes you want to smoke, then don’t go to work, don’t go to the store, do go anywhere for at least the first 3 days. Find a way around it, somehow.
Know what you want, why you want it, and choose to be dedicated to it above all things. This is the proper mind set for an individual that has issues with self control. I have self control issues, and so does ever smoker because we can’t just put the smoke down, we have to struggle to stay away. Make the decision today, that you will be in control of your life, and do not let anyone or anything take you down.
I want everyone to know that you have my full support. Email me or anything at anytime and I would be happy to be your quit smoking advice buddy. I may even give out my phone number if anyone is really struggling with it….some of you already have it. Just be willing to make a sacrifice of temporary pain, or discomfort, and you will make it through, just like we always do.
Thanks and Good luck!
